However, this creates a recurring problem for serious mod users.<\/p><p><strong>SCS Software releases updates frequently.<\/strong> Every major update changes game files, and many mods become incompatible overnight. Mod authors need time to test and update their work, sometimes days, sometimes weeks. If Steam updates your game automatically before your mods are ready, you may find yourself unable to play, facing crashes, missing assets, or broken save files.<\/p><p><strong>Steam Workshop also updates mods automatically<\/strong>, without asking for your permission. A mod author may push an incomplete update, or a new version may conflict with other mods in your load order, breaking a carefully balanced setup that took you hours to configure.<\/p><p>The solution is to take full manual control of both the game and the mods, deciding yourself when and what gets updated. This guide walks you through exactly how to do that, step by step.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-99cd5be elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"99cd5be\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">\ud83e\uddf0 What You Will Need<\/span><\/h2><ul><li>\ud83d\udddc\ufe0f <strong>7-Zip<\/strong> installed \u2014 free from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.7-zip.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">7-zip.org<\/a>. Lets you peek inside mod archives without extracting them.<\/li><li>\ud83d\udcbe <strong>Free disk space<\/strong> \u2014 approximately <strong>double<\/strong> the size of your current Workshop mod folder, temporarily.<\/li><li>\ud83c\udf10 <strong>A web browser<\/strong> \u2014 for looking up mod names on the Steam Workshop when needed.<\/li><li>\u23f1\ufe0f <strong>20\u00a0to 60 minutes<\/strong> \u2014 depending on how many mods you have.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-75b630c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"75b630c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">\ud83d\udd12 Part 1 Freezing the Game Itself<\/span><\/h2><h3><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">Step 1.1 Change the Automatic Update Setting<\/span><\/h3><ol><li>Open <strong>Steam<\/strong> and go to your <strong>Library<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Right-click on <strong>Euro Truck Simulator 2<\/strong> and select <strong>Properties<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Click the <strong>Updates<\/strong> tab on the left.<\/li><li>Under <strong>Automatic Updates<\/strong>, open the dropdown and select: &#8220;Wait until I launch the game&#8221;<\/li><li>Close the Properties window.<\/li><\/ol><p>.<\/p><div><p><strong>\ud83d\udca1 What this does:<\/strong> Steam will no longer download updates silently in the background. Updates only trigger when you actively click Play.<\/p><p><strong>\u26a0\ufe0f <span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">Important:<\/span><\/strong> This setting alone is not enough. Even with it enabled, Steam will still force an update when you click Play. You need the next step to truly bypass this.<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1ee1a66 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1ee1a66\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">Step 1.2 Use Steam&#8217;s Offline Mode to Freeze Everything<\/span><\/h3><p>Steam&#8217;s Offline Mode is the most effective freeze available. When Steam is offline it has <strong>no internet connection whatsoever,<\/strong> nothing can update: not the game, not Workshop mods, nothing at all.<\/p><p>When you want to play without triggering any update:<\/p><ol><li>Open <strong>Steam<\/strong>.<\/li><li>In the top menu bar click <strong>Steam \u2192 Go Offline<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Confirm by clicking <strong>Enter Offline Mode<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Launch ETS2 as normal, nothing will update.<\/li><\/ol><p>.<\/p><p>When you are ready to update:<\/p><ol><li>Go to <strong>Steam \u2192 Go Online<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Launch ETS2, pending updates will now apply.<\/li><\/ol><p>.<\/p><div><p><strong>\ud83d\udca1 For beginners:<\/strong> Think of Offline Mode as a complete pause button for Steam. Your game, saves, and mods remain completely untouched. You can switch online and offline as many times as you want.<\/p><p><strong>\u26a0\ufe0f Why you should do a manual mod backup (Part 2):<\/strong> Offline Mode is sufficient while you are actively using it. However, there will be times when you go online for unrelated reasons, like browsing Steam, downloading something else, or simply forgetting. The moment Steam reconnects, it may silently sync and update your Workshop mods in the background. The manual backup in Part 2 ensures your frozen mod setup is always protected inside a folder Steam cannot touch, regardless of your online or offline status.<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9d1146e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9d1146e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">\u23ea Part 1B Reverting to a Previous Version of ETS2<\/span><\/h2><p>Here is something many players do not know: <strong>SCS Software deliberately keeps previous versions of ETS2 available on Steam<\/strong>, specifically for players who use mods that have not yet been updated. Even if you accidentally updated the game, or a new version broke your setup, you can roll back at any time.<\/p><ol><li>Open <strong>Steam<\/strong> \u2192 right-click <strong>Euro Truck Simulator 2<\/strong> \u2192 <strong>Properties<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Click <strong>Game Versions &amp; Betas<\/strong> in the left menu.<\/li><li>You will see a list of available versions. The entries labeled temporary_1_XX (e.g. temporary_1_58) are older versions kept specifically for mod users.<\/li><li>Select the version that matches your mods. Steam will download and install it automatically.<\/li><li>Launch ETS2 \u2014 it will now run on the selected older version.<\/li><\/ol><p>.<\/p><div><p><strong>\ud83d\udca1 To return to the latest version:<\/strong> Go back to <strong>Game Versions &amp; Betas<\/strong> and select <strong>Default Public Version<\/strong>.<\/p><p><strong>\u26a0\ufe0f Important:<\/strong> After switching to a previous version, always double-check that Automatic Updates is still set to <em>&#8220;Wait until I launch the game&#8221;<\/em>, and switch Steam to Offline Mode before playing. Steam may otherwise push the game back to the latest version the next time you go online.<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b5fd0aa elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b5fd0aa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">\ud83d\uddc2\ufe0f Optional Part 2 Freezing Your Workshop Mods<\/span><\/h2><p>Steam Workshop mods update automatically whenever a mod author pushes a new version, with no warning and no native way to prevent it. The solution is to take your own backup copy of each mod, rename them for easy identification, and place them manually inside ETS2&#8217;s local mod folder where Steam has no access.<\/p><h3><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">Understanding the Folder Structure<\/span><\/h3><p>Steam stores all downloaded Workshop mods here:<\/p><div>[Steam drive]\\Steam\\steamapps\\workshop\\content\\227300\\<\/div><p>227300 is ETS2&#8217;s Steam App ID.<\/p><p>Inside that folder you will find many subfolders, each named with a long number, the Workshop Item ID of each mod:<\/p><div>227300\\<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u251c\u2500\u2500 3701130517\\\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2190 one mod<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u251c\u2500\u2500 2988462378\\\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2190 another mod<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u2514\u2500\u2500 1649945117\\\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2190 and another<\/div><p>.<\/p><p>Inside each numbered folder you will find one of the following:<\/p><ul><li>\ud83d\udce6 <strong>A ZIP file<\/strong> (commonly named <code>ms2_content.zip<\/code>) \u2014 the most common case.<\/li><li>\ud83d\udcc1 <strong>A decompressed folder<\/strong> containing the mod files directly \u2014 less common.<\/li><li>\ud83d\udd37 <strong>One or more SCS files<\/strong> \u2014 a native ETS2 format used by some mods instead of a ZIP.<\/li><li>\u26a0\ufe0f <strong>A combination of SCS files and a ZIP<\/strong> \u2014 the rarest case. All files are required and must each be renamed and moved individually. Covered in detail below.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9a47c4e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9a47c4e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">Step 2.1 Check Your Free Disk Space<\/span><\/h3><ol><li>Right-click the <code>227300<\/code> folder \u2192 <strong>Properties<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Note the total size shown, you will need at least <strong>double that amount<\/strong> of free space available.<\/li><\/ol><p>.<\/p><p><strong>\ud83d\udca1 Space-saving tip:<\/strong> Once all mods are confirmed working inside ETS2, you can delete the backup folder to reclaim that space. Only the files inside the mod folder are needed going forward.<\/p><h3><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">Step 2.2 Copy the Workshop Folder to a Backup Location<\/span><\/h3><ol><li>Navigate to:<div>[Steam drive]\\Steam\\steamapps\\workshop\\content\\227300\\<\/div><\/li><li>Copy the entire <code>227300<\/code> folder.<\/li><li>Paste it somewhere outside of Steam&#8217;s directories, for example:<div>D:\\ETS2 Mods Backup\\<\/div><\/li><\/ol><div><p>.<\/p><p><strong>\u26a0\ufe0f <span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">Do not move the original folder.<\/span><\/strong> Copy it. Steam must keep its own copy intact.<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-19d674e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"19d674e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">Step 2.3 Rename Each Mod to a Human-Readable Name<\/span><\/h3><p>This is the most time-consuming part, but very important. Without proper names you will have no idea which mod is which later. Work inside your <strong>backup copy<\/strong>, not the original.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">\ud83d\udd0d Method A Check the mod description file inside 7-Zip<\/span><\/p><ol><li>Open the numbered folder (e.g. <code>3701130517<\/code>).<\/li><li>You will see a file like <code>ms2_content.zip<\/code>. <strong>Do not extract it.<\/strong><\/li><li>Right-click \u2192 <strong>7-Zip \u2192 Open archive<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Look for a file named <code>mod_description.txt<\/code> and double-click it, 7-Zip will open it in Notepad without extracting.<\/li><li>Copy the mod name from the text file, then close Notepad and 7-Zip.<\/li><li>Rename the ZIP file using this format:<div>Steam [Mod Name].zip<\/div>Example: Steam ETS2 Traffic Trailers Mega Pack.zip<\/li><\/ol><div><p>.<\/p><p>The <strong>Steam<\/strong> prefix is intentional \u2014 it identifies these manually managed mods inside the game&#8217;s mod manager and makes it easy to swap back to Workshop versions when you decide to update.<\/p><\/div><p><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">\ud83c\udf10 Method B Look up the Steam Workshop page<\/span><\/p><p>If the description file does not contain the mod name, note the numbered folder name and visit:<\/p><div>https:\/\/steamcommunity.com\/sharedfiles\/filedetails\/?id=3701130517<\/div><p>Replace the number with your folder&#8217;s ID. The Workshop page will show the mod&#8217;s full name at the top. Copy it and rename the file as in Method A.<\/p><p>\ud83d\udcc1 If the mod is a decompressed folder instead of a ZIP<\/p><p>Rename the <strong>folder itself<\/strong> using the same <code>Steam [Mod Name]<\/code> convention. For example, rename <code>usa_traffic_pack<\/code> to <code>Steam USA Traffic Pack<\/code>.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">\u26a0\ufe0f Special Case Mods with multiple SCS files (and possibly a ZIP)<\/span><\/p><p>Rarely, a mod&#8217;s folder will contain a mix of <code>.scs<\/code> files and possibly a ZIP. The mod author has split it into components that must all be loaded together. In this case, rename <strong>every single file<\/strong> by adding the mod name as a prefix. Do not rename just one, the mod will not work unless all components are present and active.<\/p><p>Original files inside the folder:<\/p><ul><li>sound.scs<br \/>158_content.scs<br \/>downgrade_info_package.scs<br \/>temp_content.zip<\/li><\/ul><p>.<\/p><p>After renaming (keeping original filename as suffix):<\/p><div>Steam Sound Fixes Pack v26.31 sound.scs<br \/>Steam Sound Fixes Pack v26.31 158_content.scs<br \/>Steam Sound Fixes Pack v26.31 downgrade_info_package.scs<br \/>Steam Sound Fixes Pack v26.31 temp_content.zip<\/div><p>.<\/p><p>Copy all of them to the <code>mod<\/code> folder and <strong>activate every one of them<\/strong> in the mod manager. Only then will the mod work as intended.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4abd8eb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4abd8eb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">Step 2.4 Copy the Renamed Mods into ETS2&#8217;s Local Mod Folder<\/span><\/h3><p>Copy all renamed files directly into:<\/p><div>[Windows user drive]\\Documents\\Euro Truck Simulator 2\\mod\\<\/div><div>.<\/div><div><p><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">\u26a0\ufe0f Critical, read this carefully<\/span><\/p><p>You must copy <strong>the files directly<\/strong> (the ZIP, SCS files, or mod folder), <strong>not<\/strong> the numbered container folder that holds them.<\/p><\/div><p><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">\u2705 Correct:<\/span><\/p><div>Euro Truck Simulator 2\\mod\\<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u251c\u2500\u2500 Steam ETS2 Traffic Trailers Mega Pack.zip<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u251c\u2500\u2500 Steam USA Traffic Pack.zip<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u2514\u2500\u2500 Steam Realistic Rain.zip<\/div><p>.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">\u274c Incorrect (game will NOT see the mods):<\/span><\/p><div>Euro Truck Simulator 2\\mod\\<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u251c\u2500\u2500 3701130517\\<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u2514\u2500\u2500 Steam ETS2 Traffic Trailers Mega Pack.zip \u00a0\u2190 too deep<\/div><h3><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">Step 2.5 Clean Up the Backup Folder (Optional but Recommended)<\/span><\/h3><p>Once you have confirmed that all mods appear correctly inside ETS2&#8217;s mod manager (see Part 3), you can safely delete the backup copy of the <code>227300<\/code> folder to recover disk space. Your working copies now live inside <code>Documents\\Euro Truck Simulator 2\\mod\\<\/code> \u2014 that is all you need going forward.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8756b24 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8756b24\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">\ud83c\udfae Part 3 Switching to Your Manually Managed Mods In-Game<\/span><\/h2><h3><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">Step 3.1 Open the Mod Manager<\/span><\/h3><ol><li>Launch ETS2 in Steam Offline Mode to prevent any updates applying on launch.<\/li><li>From the main menu, open the <strong>Mod Manager<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ol><p>You will now see two versions of each mod, the original Workshop entry and your manually placed one.<\/p><div><p><strong>\ud83d\udca1 How to tell them apart at a glance:<\/strong> Workshop mods display a <strong>Steam icon on their thumbnail<\/strong>. Your manually placed mods will have the same thumbnail but <strong>without the Steam icon<\/strong>.
